2006 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
[On repeating as 200 yd Fly Champ @ '06 NCAAs] “It feels good to keep my title. This year I was really trying to break the NCAA record and I was just off. I was a little bit disappointed, but I’m really happy to go out with the win.”
[On his final swim as a Wolverine @ '06 NCAAs] “I had to rein my emotions in. Being a Michigan athlete has meant so much to me. It’s the most meaningful thing I’ve done in my life. Knowing that it was my last time wearing the block ‘M’ was hard to grasp.”
[On classmates Chris DeJong and Peter Vanderkaay after '06 NCAAs] “Those two guys have been my rock at Michigan. I don’t know if I’ll ever find as good of guys or as good of friends like them. Words can’t describe what it means to be able to go out with them. It’s been an honor to swim with them.”
[On their 800 yd Free Relay finish at '06 NCAAs] "We're happy the way we performed at a big pressure meet like this, obviously we would've liked to have won, but we're happy to be here representing Michigan."
2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
[On his 200 Fly final at 2005 Worlds] "I am happy with my race. There is always room for improvement, but I don’t think I could have asked for more in this performance. It’s a big international competition, I will be back here again and improve on that place. I had some idea of where I was in the race, and my strategy was to make my move towards the end. I tried to stay in my own race and not focus too much on what everybody else was doing. I had a specific mind race I was trying to stick to. I am content with that race.’’
[On his 200 Fly prelim at 2005 Worlds] "I felt good for the morning swim. I was very nervous so it feels good to get the first swim under my belt. I will be a lot better tonight. It is a good starting point; this is where I thought I would be. I want to be under 1.56 either tonight or tomorrow in the finals."
[On his 200 Fly semi at 2005 Worlds] "I am very disappointed with that effort. I would like to make it to the finals. I can only hope that I do. If I get a chance to do it, hopefully it will go better than this race."
[On Michael Phelps' early performance at 2005 Worlds] "He's one of my best friends. You walk a fine line. I don't think he wanted to talk much about that. . . . I don't think anyone had any doubt he would bounce back. He got his game face on. I think it woke him up."
2005 BIG 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
[His advice to the young Michigan swimmers for '05 Big Ten Champs] “We told them to be ready. There are going to be a lot of other fast guys, and they need to be prepared to step up and get the job done.”
[On the pressure to repeat success at '05 Big Ten Champs] "It’s hard not to put that pressure on yourself. I obviously want to go faster than I did last year, but, as long as I get wins that we need, then I’m fine with that.”
[Being ready for '05 Big Ten Champs] “I think the team is prepared. We’ve been working towards this all year, and (Bowman) is very encouraging, so it’s brushing off on us. I think everyone is ready to go.”
2005 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
[On his great meets at Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center] “I guess now this is my favorite pool, because I have gotten an NCAA Championship out of it. This pool swims really fast, but it’s not the pool that makes the difference it is the competition and the guys around you that make it fast, and that atmosphere was really great tonight.”
[On the key to his 200 Fly NCAA race] “You know I am not really sure but I think tonight was my night and I think that one of the differences for me is having a good coach in Bob (Bowman) and great training partners on our Michigan team that have really helped out my game.”
[On winning an NCAA championship] "It is something I have dreamed about for a long time. I can remember daydreaming about it as a little kid, winning an NCAA championship. I'd watch it on TV every year. It's so special. Words can't describe how it feels."
[On his race strategy] "I knew that I could finish better than anyone else in the race. I just tried to go out with everybody and then just beat them home."
[On having former Wolverine Tom Malchow present his award] "That was truly meaningful. Part of my success I can attribute to Tom because for two years we trained together and I learned from him. He was the best at what he did for so long and it really meant a lot. It was kind of a proverbial passing of the torch."
[On the team's performance] "I feel we completely maxed out our potential. I thought we could not have done any better I am really proud of the guys and the way everyone stepped up. I think it bodes well for us in the years to come."
2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS
[On winning the 200 Fly] "I was tired during the race today, but very motivated because I am coming off an emotional high at the NCAAs. My time was not as important as swimming a smart race. I needed to get some open water out in front and stay there. It's been a life goal of mine to win NCAAs and make the World team. I am so blessed to have a great team and a great coach."
[On setting the meet, conference and pool records in the 200 fly] "Big Ten has a history of great flyers. It's a tremendous honor to be considered one of them."
[On breaking Tom Malchow's record with him in attendance at '04 Big Ten Champs] "Tom is a great buddy of mine. He is my training partner. He has showed me so much. Without him I wouldn't be able to do that. It means a lot for him to be here to watch it."
OTHER
“A lot of times I had the opportunity to break through and do something really great, but that did not happen until this year. Bob (Bowman) convinced me that I could be a real player.”
[On training with Michael Phelps] “I can’t argue with training with the best ever on a day-to-day basis. It’s only made me better – and I have to attribute part of my success – to seeing what the best flyer of all time does on a daily basis.”
[On his big year in 2005] "It's been a great year. It's been not just the turning point in swimming but in my life in general. I've become a more-mature individual in the pool and in school."
"Bob (Bowman) has taught me a lot how to become a champion," said Tarwater, 21. "He's been so instrumental. Bob is a very technical guy. His emphasis on perfect strokes has really helped."
[On competing at 2005 Worlds] "There is some added pressure with this being my first real international competition. I couldn't be any more honored to represent this country. This is no time to choke or think, 'Can I do this or not?' ''
"I hope to be on more national teams in the future. I hope to take the knowledge back to Michigan for my last year. It will help me be a better leader."
"Definitely, I’m a rock guy. It’s not that I have anything against rap. I just like rock and roll music and I always have. So I am more a rocker than a rapper."
"Honestly, as a kid – and up to now – I have no talent toward making things!"
"I was a pretty wild child."
"Sometimes I sit around and think about how much I like my name! "
[On his friendship with Chris DeJong and Peter Vanderkaay] "We keep each other balanced out, not just athletically, but socially and emotionally."
"The novelty of snow has not worn off for me yet – I still enjoy the winter!"
"My long-term goal right now is, barring injury, to train for the 2008 Olympic Trails."
